To combat this issue, Washington Department of Licensing (DOL) has introduced a new security feature for driver’s licenses and identification cards that will make it more difficult for scammers to create counterfeit IDs or fraudulent documents. The new security enhancement is known as a «scannable barcode.» It is a three-dimensional barcode composed of data that can be easily read by machines that scan IDs. These barcodes will contain encrypted information meant to prevent fraud.
The scannable barcode provides an added level of security to the State of Washington ID cards. When an ID is scanned, the encrypted information will identify counterfeit IDs and alert the person scanning the ID. This enhances the efficiency of those who check IDs, such as law enforcement officials or employees in businesses that sell age-restricted products.
Moreover, the new scannable barcode technology protects Washington state residents’ personal information. The encrypted information within the barcodes contains only the necessary information to verify the ID’s authenticity, preventing the issue of identity theft that occurs with traditional ID documents.
However, there are still challenges in place even with this new security feature. Scammers are creating more sophisticated and advanced methods of producing counterfeit IDs that could bypass even the barcode technology. As such, it is essential to remain vigilant and cautious when presented with an ID that appears suspicious.
